Incidental Pest – Ticks

Ticks are pesky problem to pet owner. Tick bites, and can potentially transmitting diseases such as Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF). Besides transmitting diseases, tick bites can cause irritation, inflammation and infections to your pet. These eight-legged critters need host animal’s bloods to reproduce. Which means your pet dogs, cats and even you are at risk of getting bitten. Once ticks latch on their host, they will only detach after they are full.

Ticks are common in woodland, grassland and heath areas. Ticks don’t jump or fly, but they will hitchhike on animal fur or your clothing as you pass by the infested grassland. Ticks are small, and the bites on your pets may be hard to detect. The easiest way to check whether your pets are infected with ticks is by running your hands over your pet body. The tick will feel like a small bump on your pet’s coat. The listed area are some potential spots that ticks may lurk on your pet’s body.

How to control tick

1. Chemical treatment

  • Compound spray on grass and bushes in your garden to reduce the number of adult and seed tick (young tick). Residual spraying can be applied at area where ticks are potentially found. Spot treatment will be performed at places where tick is spotted.

2. Proofing

  • Mow lawn, trim grass and edge ornamental plants, bushes and plants in planter boxes; This will reduce the infestation hotspot where ticks have the chances to latch on a potential host.
  • Wear your pet tick-preventive collar.

3. Sanitation

  • If possible don’t allow your pet to wander outside and socialize freely with wild dogs, this may increase the risk of ticks latching onto them. If your pet wanders outside every day, make sure to check him daily.
  • Check your cloths and your pet after a walk in the park.
  • Send your pet to veterinary and pet care shop to have them de-tick
  • Tumble dry clean all your clothing for at least 10 minutes to kill ticks; you may also soak wash your cloths in hot water.
  • Bath your pet often with medicated shampoo; administrate oral tick-preventive chemicals to pets;
